Euro 2012: Stadiums of Hate

Concerns of Racism Ahead of Euro 2012

The most important sporting event in Eastern Europe since the fall of the Berlin Wall begins June 8 with the European soccer championships co-hosted by Poland and Ukraine.

But a complicated racial issue has arisen as the families of two of England’s black players have said they will probably not attend the 16-team tournament, fearing abuse or violence in Ukraine, where the team will play its first three matches. A BBC documentary depicting racist behavior at soccer games there has further inflamed emotions.

Sol Campbell warns fans to stay away from Euro 2012

Euro 2012 should not have been awarded to Poland and Ukraine because of entrenched racism and violence, Sol Campbell has told the BBC's Panorama.

The former England captain's advice to fans is to "stay home, watch it on TV... don't even risk it."

Uefa, European football's governing body, said awarding the tournament to the two nations was an opportunity to tackle social challenges like racism.

It said the tournament was a chance for both countries to improve their image.

Panorama spent a month filming at matches in both the joint host nations and witnessed Nazi salutes from the terraces, black players being taunted with monkey chants, rampant anti-Semitism and a vicious assault on a group of Asian students.

Ukraine, Poland protest Euro 2012 racism accusations; call report ‘outrageous’ and ‘biased’

European Championship co-hosts Ukraine and Poland denounced a BBC report that portrayed their fans as racist, and European soccer’s governing body reiterated that all foreign guests will be safe.

The BBC Panaroma documentary, titled “Euro 2012: Stadiums of Hate,” showed fans in the two nations giving the Nazi salute and taunting black players with monkey noises. Asian students were also shown being attacked at Metalis Stadium in Kharkiv, one of the host venues.
